CENTRAL BANK OF IRELAND

The Story of the Central Bank of Ireland , 75 Years of Change

The exposition gets through the story of the irish currency after the Indipendence of 1922. It talks about the Currency Commission (1927) wich projected a new national currency. Percy Metcalfe, an english sculptor and designer, won the contest for the design of the new irish coins. The jury stated that his work was” incorparabily superior ” to the competitors work. The exhibition tells also about the controvertial judjes that were given to Metcalfe’s
work because of his animals and femile rapresentation that, at the time, were
considerated inhappropriate.

We visited the Central Bank of Ireland Visitor Centre recently, and it was an
interesting experience. The museum is quite small, but it tells the story of Ireland’s
money and banking history in a clear and engaging way.

There are some unique
items on display, like old Irish coins and banknotes, and I found the part about the
creation of the Irish currency after independence especially fascinating.

The visit is quite short – it takes about 20 minutes – and we felt that the
organisation could be improved. Some parts weren’t very easy to follow, and there
wasn’t much signage to guide visitors through the exhibition.

However, the space is
modern and well designed, and the entry is free, which makes it worth a quick stop
if you’re in the Docklands area.We would recommend this experience to anyone
interested in Irish history, economics, or design.
It’s especially good for students or travellers who enjoy learning about a country’s
past in a visual and interactive way.
