Work and study from Japan…let’s talk with Kumiko

Hi Kumiko, can you tell us something about yourself?

I’m 26 years old and I come from Japan. I love nature and I’ve always been attracted by every nuance of it. One of my hobbies is photography. I really like to eternalize some moments, landscapes above all. That’s probably why I’m also fascinated by paintings, especially the impressionist ones. And then travelling of course…currently I’m doing the English & Work Experience program at Travelling Languages.

Why did you choose Ireland?

Well, I wanted to discover Europe and I was looking for an English speaking country because I wanted to improve my English. In Japan we have a working holiday program for Europe: my first idea was to get the Visa for England, but it was very difficult. That’s why I chose Ireland. And considering my love for nature, I think I made the right decision.

Why did you choose Travelling Languages?

I wanted to improve my English and at the same time I fancied doing a work experience in a social and cultural environment different from what I was used to. Travelling Languages provides courses and work experience for non EU students. It was perfect for me. In Japan I used to work for a flower import company and currently Travelling Languages is helping me to get an internship in my field.

Let’s talk about English & Work Experience. Can you explain exactly what it is?

During the morning I attend English class with other students from all over the world and at the moment in the afternoon I’m in the school office. Currently I’m in charge of translating some pages of the website from English to Japanese. I will soon start to contact some Japanese agencies. It’s going to be a challenge for me!

What do you like about Dublin and what do you dislike?

I love the fact that here people always want to help each other and that Dublin is a multicultural city. At the same time I didn’t expect to see so many Japanese restaurants, but I think it’s something connected to the multicultural environment. And the weather is much better than I expected!

What main differences have you noticed between your country and Ireland?

Lots of differences! In Japan when you’re working…you’re working! Do you know what I mean? No time for chatting! Here in Ireland everybody likes to talk to you…all the time! Then, in Japan you need to be very punctual at work, while in Ireland they’re very flexible. Another thing I immediately noticed is a cultural difference: in Japan we have less physical contact, while here it’s normal to hug a friend, even if you’ve only known them for five minutes.

What’s your goal for the future?

My aim is to get a position in the flower industry. In Japan I was responsible for importing flowers but I had issues talking on the phone, I had lots of misunderstanding due to the language. I decided to come to Ireland to improve my English in order to grow professionally. And now everything is up to me!
